KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Senior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) delivered a two-out single to center field  to drive in the winning run as the University of Southern Maine Huskies came from behind in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Amherst College Mammoths 6-5 in a non-conference game Friday evening in Osceola Heritage Park #2.  The game opened the Huskies' seven-game Florida swing.

Southern Maine's second walk-off win of the season lifts its overall record to 2-1.  Amherst had its four-game winning streak snapped by the loss and falls to 4-2 overall.

Down 5-4 heading into their final turn at bat, the Huskies used three hits and a walk to push two runs across for the win.  Junior Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) doubled with one out.  Following a strikeout, junior Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) brought Olszak home with an RBI single.  Hapworth stole second before senior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) worked his way on with a walk.  Warren then delivered the winning run with his second single of the game.

The game was a see-saw affair in the early innings as the Huskies took a 3-0 lead in the second inning before the Mammoths struck for five runs in the third.  The Huskies pulled within one with a single run in the fifth.

USM scored three runs in the second on a fielder's choice and a two-run homer from senior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood).

The Mammoths came right back scoring five times in the third.  The first runs crossed the plate on a wild pitch.  Senior Mike Nardone (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) followed two batters later with an RBI single.  After a strikeout, rookie Chris Henley (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) produced an RBI single.  The final two runs came home on a two-out infield error.

Quintal scored in the fifth when he led off the inning with a walk.  After two were out, Quintal stole second, Hapworth walked, and Dexter singled to right field to score Quintal to make it 5-4.  That scored would hold until the ninth.

Hapworth, Warren and junior Kip Richard (Kennebunk, Maine) each had two hits for the Huskies.  Four USM hurlers limited the Mammoths to eight hits while striking out 12.  The ninth-inning heroics made a winner of senior left-hander Henry Curran (South Portland, Maine) who pitched the top of the ninth striking out the side around a walk and single.

Senior reliever Mike Dow (Joliet, Ill.) took the loss going 1.2 innings.  Dow was touched for two runs on four hits and a walk while fanning two.

Southern Maine will have a quick turnaround taking on Illinois Wesleyan Saturday morning (10:30 a.m.) in Lakeland, Fla.  Amherst closes its eight-game southern swing with a doubleheader Saturday against Anderson University (Indiana).
