#12 Southern Maine Downs Illinois Wesleyan 9-2
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Senior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) went 4 for 5, including a home run, scored three runs and drove in three to lead the #12 University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-2 victory of the Illinois Wesleyan University Titans Saturday morning at Henley Field.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies and improves their overall mark to 3-1. The Titans, concluding their nine-game Florida trip, had their three-game winning streak stopped by the loss, falling to 7-4 overall.
Warren, who produced the game-winning hit in the Huskies' 6-5 walk-off win over Amherst College Friday night, hit his first home run of the season leading off the second inning. He followed with a single leading off the fourth, a two-run single in the fifth and a single in the ninth.
Junior Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) and senior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) were repeat hitter in the Huskies' 12-hit attack. Olszak had a pair of singles while Dexter had a single and a double.
Junior right-hander Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy) earned his first win of the season going six-plus innings. Feeney allowed two runs on two hits and six walks while striking out two. Classmate Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) came on after Feeney walked the leadoff batter in the seventh to throw two scoreless innings. Senior David Richman (Winnetka, Ill.) pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Rookie Dom DiLello (Springfield, Ill.) drove in both Titan runs. DiLello walked with the bases loaded in the fourth inning, and lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Titans were held to just four hits by the Huskies' three hurlers.
IWU used 10 pitchers in the game. Freshman Evan Hill (Gurnee, Ill.), who surrendered Warren's round tripper, was tagged with the loss.
Southern Maine grabbed the lead on Warren's homer in the second, and added a single run in the third without the benefit of a hit. The Huskies made it 4-0 in the fourth on an RBI double from rookie Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and a sacrifice fly by senior Jack Sylvia (Glastonbury, Conn.).
After the Titans got on the board in the home half of the fourth on DiLello's bases loaded walk, USM tacked up a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to stretch its lead to 8-1. Warren drove in the two fifth-inning runs, and a pair of Titan errors brought in two in the sixth.
Southern Maine continues its seven-game Florida swing on Sunday (9:45 a.m.) playing the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at Lake Myrtle Field #4 in Auburndale, Florida. Illinois Wesleyan returns to action next Saturday playing a doubleheader at Washington University in St. Louis.
