Huskies Take On St. Norbert on Tuesday
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Lions pounded out 13 hits and benefited from eight walks and four hit batsmen to defeat the 12th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies 15-4 in a non-conference game Monday morning Chain O Lakes Field #1.
The loss snapped the Huskies' three-game winning streak and dropped them to 4-2 on the season (3-1 on their Florida swing). The Lions improved to 3-1 overall.
Junior Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) went 3-for-3 for the Huskies. Senior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) had a pair of singles and an RBI. Senior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) drove in two runs with a double.
Sophomore right-hander Joshua Joy (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) started on the hill for USM and was tagged with the loss. Joy went two-plus innings allowing six runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out two. Junior Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) put in a solid long-relief outing going four innings allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks.
Junior David Cardona (Elizabeth, N.J.) led the Lions attack with three hits. Senior Danny Borup (Plainsboro, N.J.) and sophomore Aydon Chavis (Cream Ridge, N.J.) each had a pair of hits. Junior Jacob Simon (Hightstown, N.J.) drove in three runs. Borup and junior Thomas Persichetti (Cherry Hill, N.J.) each scored three runs.
TCNJ starting pitcher, junior Michael Walley (Yardley, Penn.), earned his first win of the season going six innings. Walley surrendered four runs on eight hits and three walks while fanning four. Rookie James Crowley (Basking Ridge, N.J.) picked up a save pitching three shutout innings. Crowley allowed just one hit and did not walk batter.
The Lions jumped on Joy in the first inning loading the bases with one out on a walk and two singles, setting the table for Simon who slammed a double to left-center field to score all three runners.
Cardona stroked a two-run single in second, and Simon scored in the third on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.
Dexter's RBI single in the home half of the third got the Huskies on the board.
The Lions added a single run in the fourth before the Huskies tried to mount a rally with three runs in the sixth to pull within three at 7-4. Warren had a two-run double, and Hillier followed with an RBI single, but the Huskies would get no closer.
TCNJ put the game away scoring eight times over the final three innings.
Southern Maine returns to action tomorrow (9:45 a.m.) talking on St. Norbert College at the Lake Myrtle Park #5 in Auburndale, Fla. TCNJ will play a doubleheader with Hamilton College on Tuesday.
