Sinclair Goes Eight, Strikes Out Career-High 12
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Sophomore right-hander James Sinclair (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched eight strong innings allowing one earned run and striking out a career-high 12 batters as the 10th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies rolled past the St. Norbert College Green Knights 14-2 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday at Lake Myrtle Park #5
The win lifts the Huskies' overall mark to 5-2 with two games remaining on their seven-game Florida trip. The Green Knights dropped their second straight to slide to 2-4 on their 11-game Florida swing.
Sinclair surrendered two runs on four hits and one walk. Both Green Knight runs came in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI double for junior Jack Maastricht (Sun Prairie, Wis.), followed by an infield error permitting Maastricht to score an unearned run.
The second-year hurler was dominating throughout striking out the side in the fifth and eighth innings. After giving up a leadoff single to senior Griffin Jack (Neenah, Wis.) in the second inning, Sinclair retired 13 in a row until sophomore Lucas Reynolds (De Pere, Wis.) reached him for a one-out single in the sixth.
The Huskies gave Sinclair plenty of offensive support scoring five times in the first inning against SNC rookie southpaw Trevor Ramthun (Campbellsport, Wis.), who did not make it out of the first inning, and building a 9-0 lead after three innings. St. Norbert used seven pitchers in the game.
Juniors Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) and Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) combined for seven hits, five runs scored and five RBI in the game. Hillier went 4-for-6 with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBI. Hapworth finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Senior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) had a double and single, scored twice and drove in one as part of the Huskies' 16-hit attack.
Hillier drove in the first run of the game with a ground out to shortstop. Hapworth followed with an RBI single. Warren's double put runners at second and third. A walk to senior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) loaded the bases, and sophomore Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) walked to force in the third run. The final two runs scored when senior Jack Sylvia's (Glastonbury, Conn.) ground ball was misplayed.
In the second Warren had an RBI single, and Sylvia drove in two with a single. Hapworth drove in the Huskies' run in the third to make it 9-0.
Southern Maine faces a big test tomorrow afternoon (2:15 p.m.) taking on #6 Rowan University at Lake Myrtle Park #1. St. Norbert takes on Keuka College for a doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Park #6 tomorrow (2:45 p.m.).
