#10 Southern Maine Comes From Behind, Downs #6 Rowan 9-7
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Senior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) drove in five runs, including three with a bases-loaded double in the ninth inning, to give the 10th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies a 9-7, come-from-behind win over the sixth-ranked Rowan University Profs in a non-conference battle Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park #6.
The win was the second straight for the Huskies, and fifth in six games to date on their annual Florida swing. The Huskies now sport a 6-2 overall mark heading into their final game in Florida tomorrow afternoon (12:30 p.m.) against Springfield College. The Profs slide to 4-3 overall with their third loss in five game in the Sunshine State.
Down 7-3, the Huskies scored two runs in the eighth on a Warren double, and four more in the ninth on an RBI single from senior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and Warren's second double in as many innings to take the win.
Dexter earned his second save of the season, and the 28th of his career, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Senior southpaw Henry Curran (South Portland, Maine) picked up his second win of the season pitching the eighth inning.
The Huskies banged out 13 hits in the game led by Dexter and junior Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) with three hits apiece. Warren, senior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) and sophomore Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) each contributed two hits.
Sophomore Nick Schooley (Marlton, N.J.) and senior Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, N.J.) each had three hits for the Profs. Junior Alex Kokos (Wayne, N.J.) had two hits. The trio were the first three hitters in the Rowan lineup and combined for eight of their team's nine hits.
Senior Andrew Cartier (Estell Manor, N.J.), the fourth Rowan hurler in the game, was tagged with his first loss of the season.
The Profs snapped a 3-3 tie scoring four unearned runs in the sixth. A two-out infield error allowed the first run to score. A bunt single from Schooley put runners at first and second. Kokos then greeted USM junior reliever Colton Lawrence (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) with a double to drive in two, and Harrold followed with another double to drive in Kokos and make it 7-3.
After a scoreless seventh, the Huskies struck for two in the eighth as Olszak and Dexter singled to set the table. Sophomore reliever Dan Corvo (River Vale, N.J.) retired the next two hitters before Warren doubled down the left-field line to score both runs.
Cartier came on in the ninth to close the game for the Profs. Junior Anthony Degifico (South Portland, Maine) led off with a double. After Cartier got a strikeout, Olszak singled to put runners on the corners. Dexter followed with a single to score Degifico, closing the gap to one. Olszak and Dexter moved up on a wild pitch, and junior Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) was walked intentionally to set up a force play at any base. Cartier got the second out with his second strikeout, but Warren came through in the clutch with his second double to clear the bases.
