#3 Southern Maine Sweeps Keene State 12-2 (7) and 10-2

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) went 5-for-7 with six RBI as the third-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a sweep of the visiting Keene State College Owls, 12-2 (7 innings) and 10-2, in a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.

The sweep gives the Huskies a three-game winning streak, and improved their record to 19-4 overall and a league-leading 8-2 in the conference.  The Owls have dropped four straight falling to 7-16 overall and 2-6 in LEC play

Dexter was 3-or-4 with a double, triple, and home run, and five RBI in nightcap after going 2-for-3 in the opener.

Game One

The Huskies hit three homers in the opener, including the first career grand slam for junior Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) to highlight an eight-run fourth inning.  Senior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) added a two-run shot in the fifth, and senior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) put the 10-run in play with his two-run homer in the sixth.

Junior right-hander Gage Feeney (Cutler, Maine/Washington Academy) picked up his third win of the season working five innings.  Feeney allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while fanning two.  Senior Tanner Laberge (Windham, Maine) retired all six batters he faced.

Game Two

In the nightcap, Dexter and sophomore Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) combined for six hits and five runs scored as the Huskies built a 6-1 lead over the first five innings.  A four-run seven inning pushed the Huskies' lead to 10-1.

Dexter handed the home side the lead in the first with his RBI double that scored Troiano.

An RBI double from Quintal and an RBI single from senior Jack Sylvia (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the fourth inflated the lead to 3-0.

The Owls reached USM sophomore starter Joshua Joy (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) for a run in the fifth on junior Tom Meucci's (Newington, Conn./Northwest Catholic) RBI single that scored classmate Sam Czel (Newtown, Conn.).  Dexter dashed the Owls hopes of a comeback hitting a three-run homer in the home half of the frame to make it 6-1.

USM put the game away in the seventh as Dexter tripled in Troiano, and later scored on a wild pitch.  Sylvia increased the margin to 10-1 with a two-run double.  Sylvia finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Joy picked up his second win of the season allowing one run on one hit and one walk over five innings.  Joy held the Owls hitless until Meucci's RBI single with two outs in the fifth.

The Owls were held in check offensively getting just three hits in game, two coming in the ninth.  Senior starter Brandon Heath (Charlestown, N.H.//Fall Mountain) took the loss on the hill.  Heath worked four innings allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out two.  He did not walk a batter.

Up Next

Southern Maine's scheduled game with Wheaton College tomorrow has been postponed due to the Lyons needing the date for a conference make-up game.  USM's next game will be Tuesday afternoon (3:30 p.m.) against Little East rival, the University of Massachusetts Boston.  Keene State will host New England College for a non-conference game on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
