GORHAM, Maine – Ranked no. 2 in the latest D3baseball.com National Poll, the top-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team begins its quest for a the 2019 Little East Conference Tournament Championship on Wednesday, May 8 (12:00 pm) at Ed Flaherty Field when it hosts sixth-seeded Castleton University Spartans in the opening game of this year's six-team, double-elimination tournament. 

The Huskies (32-5, 14-2 LEC) claimed the 2019 regular season Little East Conference crown this Saturday sweeping Plymouth State University Panthers (10-3, 17-5 (7 innings).  The sweep kept Southern Maine ahead of second-seed UMass Boston Beacons (26-11, 13-3 LEC).  Rounding out the six-team field are third-seed Rhode Island College Anchormen (25-14, 9-7 LEC), fourth-seed Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors (22-16, 8-8 LEC), fifth-seed UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (17-19, 8-8 LEC) and sixth-seed Castleton University (17-19, 7-9 LEC).   

Veteran USM head coach Ed Flaherty's team is led by two-time American Baseball Coaches' Association All-American senior second baseman and closer Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee).  Batting  a team-leading .390 with 31 RBI, 40 runs scored and four home runs, Dexter has been lights out on the mound working 25 innings of relief with seven saves.  Holding his opponents to a .169 batting average, Dexter has a 2.16 earned run average which dips to 1.74 against Little East competition.   

In addition to Dexter, seven Huskies are hitting above .300 entering the tournament including seniors Jack Sylvia (Glastonbury, Conn.) - .324, Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) - .346  and Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine) - .353, juniors Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.), - .367,  Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) - .360 and Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) - .318, and sophomore Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) - .344.  Warren and Quintal are among the LEC leaders in RBI with 39 and 43 respectively, while Troiano is fourth in home runs with eight. 

Starting pitchers Ben Lambert and Gage Feeney have led the Huskies from the mound.  Lambert leads the Little East Conference in wins at 8-0 and ERA at 1.31.  Working 55.0 innings (fourth in the LEC), Lambert averaged nine strikeouts per game.  Feeney, a 2018 All-LEC pick, has a 6-1 record with a 3.75 earned run average in 43.2 innings of work.  Averaging 5.15 strikeouts per game, Feeney has held his opponents to a .237 batting average. 

 

 

The winner of the LEC tournament will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament that begins next week, Friday-Sunday, May 17-19.  Regional championships will have 58 teams from across the NCAA Division III landscape and will feature 13 regionals with four-team double-elimination tournaments and three two-team, best-of-five tournaments.  The 16 teams that are Regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round, Friday-Saturday, May 24-25, and will feature eight two-team, best-of-three series tourneys, and the eight winners will advance to the NCAA Division III World Series.  The NCAA Division III World Series will be hosted at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa May 31-June 4/5.

Admission: Ticket prices = Adults - $5, Students & Senior Citizens - $3, Children 6 and under will be admitted free of charge.  There are no complimentary tickets available.  USM students are free with valid student ID. 

     With the exception of service animals, dogs are NOT permitted at Flaherty Field.
