GORHAM, Maine –  Senior Devin Warren (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of triples and an RBI, and sophomore righty Joshua Joy (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonksee) pitched a strong six innings to lead the top-seed University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-3 win over the sixth-seeded Castleton University Spartans in the first game of the 2019 Little East Conference Baseball Championship at Ed Flaherty Field.

With the win, Southern Maine, ranked no. 2 in the latest ABCA and D3baseball.com national polls, earns its 12th consecutive victory, increasing its record to 33-5.  Castleton University is now 17-20 overall.  The Huskies advance to the winner's bracket and will play again on Thursday (3:30 pm) against the loser of today's game three contest between third-seed Rhode Island College Anchormen and fourth-seed Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors.  Castleton faces the game two loser between second-seed UMass Boston and fifth-seed UMass Dartmouth tomorrow at 12 pm.

Continuing its trend of two-out rallies, Southern Maine took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI triple from Warren. The Huskies went ahead 1-0 on an RBI groundout from senior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) to score junior Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.).  Warren's triple knocked in junior Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) who cranked out a double to right field in his first at bat.

With Joy retiring the Spartans in order through the first three innings, Southern Maine added a single run in the bottom of the second and bottom of the third to lead Castleton 4-0.  Sophomore Sam Troiano (South Portland, Maine) had a two-out RBI single to center in the second, while senior Zach Quintal (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) had an RBI ground out in the third to bring Warren to home plate after a lead-off triple.

The score remained unchanged until the top of the fifth when the Spartans took advantage of a Husky defensive miscue to score a pair of runs.  After leading off the inning with a single up the middle, Castleton's Matt Jackson (Shrewsbury, Mass.) crossed the plate for his team's first run on a mishandle sacrifice bunt attempt.  Senior Pat Mumford (Fairbanks, Alaska/Mill River) made it 4-2 with an RBI ground out before Joy ended the inning with a strikeout and a ground out sandwiched around an intentional walk.

Castleton sophomore Josh Ferro (Queens, N.Y./Richmond Hill) led off the seventh with a triple to chase out Joy.  With Joy out, USM senior Henry Curran (South Portland, Maine) entered the game and registered the first out.  However, Castleton's Mumford earned another RBI for the Spartans and reached second on a on another muffed defensive play. The Huskies were able to get out of the inning, however, as Troiano double up the Spartan lead runner after making a running grab in left field, but held just a one-run lead, 4-3, after the top of the seventh.

In the home half of the seventh, USM senior Jack Sylvia (Glastonbury, Conn./Dartmouth) gave the Huskies an insurance run with a RBI ground out to the right side of the field. Dexter, Warren and Quintal each drew one-out walks to load the bases, setting up Sylvia for the RBI. Castleton reliever senior Charlie Stapleford (Vergennes, Vermont) was able to stop any further damage getting the final USM batter out on strikes.

Both Curran and Stapleford were able to work their way around singles in the eighth inning to keep the score 5-3 in favor of the Huskies headed into the top of the ninth.  In the ninth, Dexter replaced Curran and came back from a lead off single to Ferro to earn his eighth save of the season.  Sylvia and Olszak helped Dexter's cause turning a double play, before Dexter struck out the final Castleton batter in the win.

Joy (5-1) picked up the win allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk in 6.0 innings.  He struck out five. Curran worked two innings yielding just a single and a walk.  Dexter gave up a single and struck out one in one inning of work.

Castleton starter junior Garrett Moran (Killingworth, Conn./Xavier) took the loss.  Moran allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and three walks, while striking out six, in six innings.

Warren finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and an RBI. Hillier went 3-for-5 with a double and two singles and a run scored. Dexter, Quintal and Sylvia each had an RBI for the Huskies.  Ferro had two of Castleton's five hits at 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Mumford collected both of Castleton's RBI.
