Lambert Picked as Pitcher of the Year

GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine junior right-handed pitcher Ben Lambert (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) was named the Pitcher of the Year for the New England Region today when D3baseball.com released its annual all-region teams and individual awards.  Lambert was also one of five Huskies to earn spots on the all-region team.

Lambert and senior infielder/relief pitcher Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) were named to the all-region first team, while junior third baseman Andrew Hillier (Bangor, Maine) was picked for the second team.  Junior shortstop Andrew Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) and junior designated hitter Dylan Hapworth (Winslow, Maine) received spots on the honorable mention squad.  This is the third straight season that Dexter has earned a spot on the all-region first team, and this is Hapworth's second honor to going along with a first-team outfield spot in 2017.

The third USM pitcher to receive the D3baseball.com New England Region Pitcher of the Year honor, Lambert had a stellar year finishing 10-1 with a 1.38 ERA.  In 12 appearances this season, including 10 starts, Lambert hurled 71.2 innings allowing just 47 hits and 30 walks while striking out 67.  Opposition hitters batted just .182 against him.  He joins Logan Carmen (2013) and Andrew Richards (2015) as recipients of the D3baseball.com Pitcher of the Year honor.

A three-time All-Little East Conference first-team pick at second base, and a four-time pick as relief pitcher, Dexter finished the season as the Huskies' second leading hitter batting .373 (75 for 201) with 13 extra-base hits and 39 RBI.  On the mound, the Husky closer had a 2-2 record with eight saves and a 1.49 ERA in 24 appearances.  He pitched 36.1 innings giving up just 21 hits and three walks while striking out 39.

A first-time all-region recipient, Hillier led the Huskies in batting with a .394 average with 16 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 39 RBI.  During the recently concluded NCAA Regional Tournament, Hillier hit an amazing .640 (16 for 25) with four doubles and nine RBI.

Olszak is making his first appearance on the all-region team.  The slick-fielding shortstop batted .337 (66 for 196) with 12 extra-base hits and 24 RBI.  Hapworth batted .303 (44 for 144) for the season with 13 extra-base hits and 33 RBI.

Southern Maine finished the 2019 season with a 37-9 overall mark, won the Little East Conference regular season title with a 14-2 mark, and reached the championship game in the NCAA regional tournament.
