With the win, Oneonta State opens its 2011 season at 1-0. Southern Maine drops its second consecutive game to fall to 0-2.
Southern Maine got on the board early in the game and took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal from junior forward Rachel Trafton (Corinth, Maine/Central). Trafton tallied the first Husky goal of the season on a rebound in the seventh minute.
The Dragons answered right back however tallying the equalizer in the eighth minute as senior midfielder Jacqueline Camp (Queensbury, N.Y.) knocked in an assist from junior midfielder Ashley Morgan (Putnam Valley, N.Y.). Morgan put the Dragons ahead 2-1 in the 14th minute and Oneonta State went on to score four more unanswered goals to take control of the game.
USM senior midfielder Haley Carter (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) tallied the Huskies second goal in the 49th minute for her first goal of the season.
USM sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made eight saves and allowed six goals on 22 shots in 66:04 minutes of action to take the loss. Freshman goalkeeper Tess Tracy (Liverpool, N.Y.) earned the win making five saves in 65:17 of action.
Southern Maine returns to action in the second day of the Oneonta Invitational facing Utica College on Sunday (11:00 a.m.). Oneonta State hosts St. Lawrence University on Sunday (2:30 p.m.).
