With the win, Utica improves its record to 1-1. The Huskies remain winless in 2011 with their third consecutive loss to fall to 0-3 overall.
Mariano scored the game's first goal of the day completing a cross from sophomore midfielder Ally Sanders (Endicott, N.Y./Maine Endwell) in the 17th minute to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 lead. Utica doubled its advantage 10 minutes later on an unassisted strike from freshman forward Aliana Stojkovski (Liverpool, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) in the 27th minute.
In the second half, USM trimmed its deficit in half when sophomore forward Natalie Harkins (Windham, Maine) recorded her first goal of the season in the 38th minute as she calmly collected a loose ball in the circle and knocked it in for an unassisted goal.
The Pioneers shut the door on any ideas of a USM comeback attempt however, as Mariano notched her second goal of the game in the 61st minute.
Utica senior goalkeeper Monica Storms (Owego, N.Y.) made five saves to earn the win. USM sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) turned in a strong performance despite the loss making 13 saves.
