Ariel Kaplan Lifts Huskies Past Gordon College 1-0
GORHAM, Maine  –  Sophomore forward Ariel Kaplan (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) knocked in a goal in the sixth minute to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over the Gordon College Fighting Scots in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in Gorham, Maine.

With the win, Southern Maine halts a three-game losing streak to improve to 1-3.  Gordon College drops its third straight to fall to 1-3.

Kaplan was successful in finding the back of the net during a flurry of Southern Maine shots early in the opening half.  After Gordon starter sophomore Anna Bury (Huntingtown, Md./The Calverton School) turned back two shots on net, Kaplan collected the rebound off a shot from freshman forward Stephanie Lomasney (York, Maine) and slotted the ball to the left side of the cage to give the Huskies the lead.

The Huskies led Gordon 1-0 at the half and were able to remain in front of the Fighting Scots thanks in part to the solid defensive efforts from freshmen Emily Garry (York, Maine) and Eryn Nelson (Old Town, Maine).  Nelson recorded her third defensive save of the season, clearing a Gordon shot headed for goal early in the second stanza.

USM sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made two saves for her first shutout win of the season.  Bury was credited with the loss allowing one goal and making two saves in 8:03 of action.  Freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Smith (Verona, N.J./Montclair Kimberley Academy) replaced Bury for the final 61:57 and made one save.   Gordon junior midfielder Melinda Fowler (Winslow, Maine) made a defensive save.

Southern Maine travels to Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).  Gordon College travels to New England College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
