Southern Maine Wins Fourth Straight, Defeats Bridgewater State 3-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass.  – Three different players each score a goal a piece to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0 win over the Bridgewater State University Bears in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater, Mass.

         With their fourth straight victory the Huskies improve to 4-3 overall and start the 2011 Little East Conference season at 2-0.  The Bears fall to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Little East.

         The Huskies struck early in the game to set the table for their fourth consecutive win as junior forward Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy) scored her first goal of the season just 1:18 into the game for an unassisted score. 

         Southern Maine doubled its advantage before the half as senior back Bethany Bougie (Sanford, Maine) scored her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke in the 21st minute.  The Huskies took their 2-0 advantage into the half, despite being outshot 5-2.  Husky sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) was up to the task however, making three saves in the opening stanza en route to her fourth straight shutout victory.  

         In the second half, senior forward Whitney McDaniel (Livermore, Maine/Livermore Falls) put the exclamation point on the Huskies win rocketing in her third goal of the season in the 49th minute. 

         Kennedy finished the game making seven saves to earn the win.  BSU junior Cassie Johansen (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and sophomore Kacie Sturgeon (Dartmouth, Mass.) combined to make five saves for the Bears.

         Southern Maine returns to action at Bowdoin College on Tuesday (6:00 p.m.).  Bridgewater State hosts Babson Colege on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.).
