Westfield State Defeats Southern Maine 2-0
WESTFIELD, Mass. - Junior midfielder Lauren Tavares (Tiverton, RI) and senior forward Jessi Gould (Canton, Mass.) scored goals to lead Westfield State University Owls to a 2-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference field hockey action on Saturday in Westfield, Mass.
Westfield improved to 7-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference after defeating Southern Maine for the first time since 2006. Southern Maine is now 6-6 and 3-2.
The Owls lost to the Huskies in shootouts the past three seasons, 5-4, 4-3, and 4-3. This year, however, Westfield played a tight defense and got big goals from Tavares and Gould.
Tavares scored in the 29th minute off a penalty corner with Gagnon getting the assist. Gould, the Owls' leading scorer this season with 21 points (10 goals, 1 assist), added an insurance tally five minutes into the second half after receiving a pass from freshman Kelly Kenney (Suffield, Conn.).
Westfield outshot Southern Maine, 19-12, and the Owls also led in corners, 10-5.
Husky goalie sophomore Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) made 10 saves. Owl senior netminder Amanda McCarthy (Franklin) had six saves.
Southern Maine travels to Plymouth State on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.). Westfield State travels to Fitchburg State on Tuesday (4:00 p.m.).
