GORHAM, Maine – Junior forwards Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, Mass./Bishop Stang) and Erica Allan (Amherst, Mass.) each scored a goal in a half to lead the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field in Gorham, Maine.
With the win, UMass Dartmouth improves to 7-5 overall and 6-1 in the Little East Conference. The Huskies drop their third straight to fall to 6-8 and 3-4 in the conference.
Taylor scored early in the first half, notching her team-leading 13 goal of the season to stake her team a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. Taylor calmly collected the ball in the circle and was able to make a move to beat USM sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Kennedy (Windham, Maine) for the unassisted tally.
UMass Dartmouth maintained its 1-0 lead through the half thanks in par to the solid goalkeeping of sophomore Kelsey Gallo (East Greenwich, R.I.). Gallo turned back seven shots on goal in the opening 35 minutes.
The Corsairs' earned an insurance goal in the 48th minute when Allan smartly redirected a pass from sophomore forward Tiffany Richard (Fitchburg, Mass.). With the Corsairs up 2-0, Gallo continued her solid work in net making five saves in the second stanza for the win.
Gallo earned the shutout turning back 12 shots. Kennedy took the loss for the Huskies allowing two goals and making seven saves.
Southern Maine hosts Bates College on Tuesday (3:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game. UMass Dartmouth will face Trinity College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) at home.
