Big Second Half Propels Southern Maine Past Westfield State 4-1

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies scored four goals in a 10-minute span to rally from a 1-0 deficit and defeat the Westfield State University Owls 4-1 in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field. 

            With the win, Southern Maine improves to 7-7 overall and 5-3 in the Little East Conference.  Westfield State slips to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference. 

            Westfield State outshot Huskies 6-5 in the first half, and Owls' freshman Colleen Fellows (Auburn, Mass.) scored the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute for a 1-0 WSU lead.  Collecting a rebound off of a save, Fellows' slotted the ball to the far post for her second goal of the season.  

            The Huskies came out aggressively in the second half and went on to outshoot the Owls 12-0 in the second frame.  However, USM did not score its equalizer until nearly 20 minutes into the second half, when junior Abigail Staples (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) knocked in her sixth goal of the season in the 54th minutes.  Just three minutes later, Staples found classmate Lili Kien (Westbrook, Maine) for the go-ahead goal in the 57th for a 2-1 Huskies' lead.  The play came on one fo the Huskies eight second-half penalty corners, and marked Kien's first goal of her career.  

            Ahead 2-1, senior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) provided the Huskies with insurance goals in the 63rd and 65th minute.  Sirois made it 3-1 with a hustle play, diving to get her stick on a loose ball in the circle, and then completed a through ball from freshman Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) for her sixth goal of the season.  

            Southern Maine freshman Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) made two saves in the win.  Sophomore Katie Vamosi (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) took the loss playing 67:15, making five saves and allowing four goals.  Freshman Riley Goulet (Marion, Mass./Old Rochester) played the final 2:45 and did not make a save. 

            Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) when it hosts Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference game.
