GORHAM, Maine – Junior Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies field hockey team has been named the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping her team to a 2-0 week in conference action. Winners of three consecutive games, the Huskies are 9-7 overall and 7-3 in the LEC.
Redman had a goal and an assist for the Huskies during the week, and led Southern Maine from the midfield, helping limit opposing teams to just one-goal per contest. In the Huskies' 2-1 win over Plymouth State, Redman earned a point with an assist on the first goal of the game as Southern Maine defeated the Panthers for the first time since 2014. In a 3-1 win over conference leader Castleton, Redman scored on a hustle play in front of the cage to score USM's third goal of the game. Southern Maine's win over Castleton was the Spartans first loss in 11 games, and first loss in LEC action.
Redman has three goals and six assists this season, both career-high totals, for 12 points. She has helped lead a defense that is limiting conference opponents to 1.3 goals per gane. The 5-3 junior has five goals and seven assists to her credit, and one defensive save in three seasons.
Southern Maine travels to Husson University tonight (6:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
