BANGOR, Maine – Senior Brooke Dugan (Thomaston, Maine/Oceanside) scored a pair of goals, including the overtime game-winner, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-3 win over the Husson University Eagles in a non-conference field hockey game Monday night at Winkin Field.
With the victory, Southern Maine extends its win-streak to four games and improves to 10-7. Husson drops its third straight game to fall to 2-11 overall.
In a back-and-forth contest, Southern Maine scored the final two goals of the game to earn its fourth consecutive win, and fifth of its last six. Husson's Arika Brochu put the Eagles on the board first in the 15th minute following an assist from Sadie Royer. The Huskies answered back with a pair of goals in the 22nd and 26th minute to go ahead 2-1. Freshman Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season to tie the game on an assist from junior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), and was followed by an unassisted goal from junior Abigail Staples (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) for the Husky lead. USM was unable to keep its one-goal advantage into the halftime break as Royer tallied her first of two goals in the game this time on an assist from Brochu.
Entering the second half knotted up at 2-2, Royer gave her team a short-lived lead in the 41st minute, but the Huskies' Dugan scored the equalizer minutes later for a 3-3 game with 27 minutes left in regulation. Despite combined for 18 shots in the second half neither team was able to find a goal in the next 27 minutes forcing overtime.
Dugan was able to secure the win for the Huskies just 3:35 into the overtime period on the Huskies' first penalty corner of the extra frame. Dugan received the inserted pass from Staples, took a touch to the right and hit a shot from distance for the game-winner, and her third goal of the season.
The Huskies are off until Friday when they travel to UMass Dartmouth (4:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference game. Southern Maine will remain on the road and face LEC opponent Bridgewater State on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in its regular season finale.
