WORCESTER, Mass. – Olivia Antonelli and Rachel Hopkins scored two goals each as the Worcester State Lancers defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 4-2 in a Little East Conference field hockey game Wednesday night at Coughlin Field.
With the win, Worcester State remained undefeated at 6-0 in the Little East Conference and improves to 10-2 overall. Southern Maine has its two-game win streak snapped to drop to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in the LEC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both teams scored early in the contest with Antonelli giving the Lancers a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute with her 12th goal of the season before USM tied the game up in the sixth minute for a 1-1 game. Mikayla Bourassa scored her first goal of the season on a feed from senior Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic).
Worcester State scored three goals, including two 90 second apart, in the second quarter. Hopkins notched her 13th goal of the season in the 19th minute, and then increased the Lancers' lead to 3-1 in the 25th. Antonelli notched the Lancers' final goal in the 27th minute for a 4-1 WSU lead.
Southern Maine sophomore Samantha Ellis (New Vineyard, Maine/Mt. Blue) scored her seventh goal of the season in the third quarter with an unassisted tally in the 39th but it was as close as the Huskies would get.
Southern Maine sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) made two saves. Jess Hopkins made three saves in the win for Worcester State.
Southern Maine hosts Westfield State on Saturday (12:00 pm) in a Little East Conference contest.
