Southern Maine Edges St. Joseph's and UMF in Season Opener
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Greg Kalagias (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) shot an even par 71 to lead the host University of Southern Maine to victory Friday in the Huskies season-opening tri-match with Saint Joseph's College and the University of Maine at Farmington at the Gorham CC.
Southern Maine posted a team score of 312 to take the top spot. Saint Joseph's edged UMaine Farmington by one stroke for the runner-up spot, 317-318.
Kalagias carded a 1-under par 34 on the front nine to take a two-stroke lead at the turn and never looked back. Senior Cam Letourneau (Hebron, Maine) of Saint Joseph's finished three strokes back with a 74, and senior Eric Aguiar (Thornton, N.H.) of UMaine Farmington took the third spot with a 75.
USM senior Shaun McKinnon (Rocky Hill, Conn.) turned in a 78, followed by junior Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine) with an 80 and junior Brendon Croteau (Lewiston, Maine) with an 83 to give USM a team score of 312.
The Huskies are back out on the links on Tuesday (11 a.m.) when they compete at the John Queenan Memorial Tournament at the Pt. Sebago GC in Casco, Maine. Saint Joseph's College is the tournament host.
