Southern Maine Runner-up at State Championship

BANGOR, Maine -- Juniors Greg Kalagias (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C./Sardis Secondary) carded 1-under par 70's on Sunday to lead the University of Southern Maine golf team to a runner-up finish at the 44th Annual Maine Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship played at Bangor Municipal Golf Club.

The Huskies posted a four-man combined score of 5-over par 289 in the final round of the two-day event for a 36-hole total of 584.  Despite their season-best score, the Huskies were not able to hold off the Husson University "Gold" squad that fired a combined score of 6-under par 278 to take the team title with a score of 574.  The Huskies held a one-stroke lead over the Husson "Gold" team, 295-296, after the first round.

Kalagias had five birdies and four bogeys in his round while Dundas had four birdies to offset a bogey and a double bogey.  Kalagias finished tied with two other players for third in the championship with a 36-hole score of 3-over par 145.  Dundas finished in a three-way tie for ninth overall with a score of 6-over par 148.

Junior Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine) joined Kalagias in the tie for third after carding a 3-over par 74 in the final round for a two-day score of 145.  Senior Mathew Mallett (Kalamazoo, Mich.), who shot an even par 71 in the opening round, posted a 4-over par 75 in the final round to finish all alone in sixth place at 146.

Husson sophomore Gavin Dugas (Pittsfield, Maine/MCI) won the individual championship.  Dugas, two shots back of the first-day leader, sophomore Jack Griffith (Simsbury, Conn./Westminster School) of Colby College, carded the best round of the tournament with a 4-under par 67 for a 36-hole score of 138.  Griffith was runner-up with his two-day score of 1-over par 143.

The Husson "Green" squad came home third at 601, followed by Bates College at 609 and Colby College at 610.

Southern Maine will be back on the links next Saturday playing in the University of Maine at Farmington Invitational at the Waterville Country Club.
