Southern Maine Takes Top Spot at UNE Invitational
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine -- Led by junior Greg Kalagias (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), the University of Southern Maine golf team continued its winning ways Thursday taking the top spot in the University of New England Invitational played at the Cape Arundel Golf Club.
The win was the Huskies' fourth in six events this fall season. USM topped the field of six teams with its score of 298. Host UNE was runner-up at 305, and the University of Maine at Farmington was third at 312.
Kalagias posted the low score of the day carding a 2-over par 71. Kalagias, tied for fifth at the turn, overcame a two-stroke deficit on the back side posting the best score (35) on the inward nine.
Coming in with scores of 75 were senior Mathew Mallett (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and junior Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.). Junior Kyle Morin (Lewiston, Maine) completed the Huskies' four-man score with a 77. Senior Shaun McKinnon (Rocky Hill, Conn.) finished on the top half of the scoresheet with a 79.
Southern Maine is back in action tomorrow afternoon (12 p.m.) hosting the unique USM Cup at Gorham CC. The event combines pairs of golfers playing three different formats - best ball, scramble and alternate shot.
