Dee & Kalagias Shoot Record 7-Under 64 to Lead Huskies

GORHAM, Maine -- Juniors Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine) and Greg Kalagias (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) shot an event record 7-under par 64 to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team to the team title at the annual USM Cup played Friday afternoon at the Gorham CC.

The unique 18-hole event is broken into three segments with the two-man groups playing six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble, and six holes of modified alternate shot.

Dee and Kalagias played the front nine in 5-under par 30 to take the lead by one stroke at the turn over the Saint Joseph's College duo of Cam Letourneau and Adam Batchelder.  The USM tandem extended their advantage to two shots over the final nine holes en route to their record score.  The previous low score was a 66 posted by USM's Joe Francoeur and Grayson Waterman in 2016, and equaled by Letourneau and Batchelder.

The USM pairing of juniors Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) and Brendon Croteau (Lewiston, Maine) tied for third place with the University of New England's Mike Rich and Austin Morgan carding 3-under par 68's.  Dundas and Croteau had the best back nine score with a 3-under par 33.

The Huskies third pair of seniors Shaun McKinnon (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Mathew Mallett (Kalamazoo, Mich.) finished with an even par 71.

The Huskies' non-team-scoring duo of senior Parker Sanderson (Bangor, Maine) and junior Kyle Morin (Lewiston, Maine) shot a 3-under 68.  Sanderson and Morin matched Dundas and Croteau for the low score on the inward half.  Rookie Brogan Kane (Scarborough, Maine) and senior Patrick Henry, Jr. (Birmingham, Ala.) finished with a 72.

Southern Maine took the team title for the third straight year with a combined score of 203 (-10).  The team title was the Huskies fifth in seven events this fall.

Saint Joseph's was runner-up with a 209 (-4).  The University of New England was third at 214 (+1) and the University of Maine at Farmington completed the field with a 226 (+13).

The Huskies are back on the links next Thursday (October 4) when they play in the Maine Maritime Academy Invitational at the Augusta CC.
