Southern Maine 12th After Day One at NEIGA Championships
BREWSTER, Mass. -- Senior captain Shaun McKinnon (Rocky Hill, Conn.) carded a 5-over par 77 on Sunday to lead the University of Southern Maine golf team on the first day of the 84th Annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championships being played at The Captains Course in Brewster, Mass.
McKinnon, in a three-way tie for 14th place overall in the field of 114, is just four shots back of first-round co-leaders Jacob Poitras of Worcester State University and Reid Buzby of Middlebury College.
USM senior Patrick Henry, Jr. (Birmingham, Ala.) is among the logjam of nine players tied for 17th place after posting a 78. Rounding out the Huskies' four-man aggregate were juniors Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine) and Brendon Croteau (Lewiston, Maine). Dee turned in an 83 while Croteau carded an 84.
Led by McKinnon and Henry, the Huskies are in 12th place among the 23 teams competing in the Division III side of the men's event. USM posted a four-man score of 322 to trail first-round leader Williams College by 12 strokes. Williams posted a 310 on Sunday. Babson College is in second place with a 313, followed by defending Husson University at 314, Middlebury at 315 and Western New England University and Nichols College at 317.
The final round of the 36-hole event will be played Monday.
