USM Opens 2019 Golf Season Downing SJC and UMF
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine golf team opened its 2019 fall schedule with a strong performance Friday defeating Saint Joseph's College and the University of Maine at Farmington in an 18-hole event at the Gorham Country Club.
The Huskies posted a four-man aggregate score of 298 to take the top spot. Saint Joseph's came in second with a 312, and UMaine Farmington posted a score of 348. USM showed its depth as all five players in the lineup broke 80.
Senior captain Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) led the Huskies with a 1-over par 72. Classmates Parker Sanderson (Bangor, Maine) and Brendon Croteau (Lewiston, Maine) tied for second with 4-over 75's. Three players, USM senior Greg Kalagias (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and the Saint Joseph's duo of senior Brendan Donovan (Auburn, Maine/St. Dominic) and freshman Trevor Flanagan (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy), tied for fourth place at 76.
The best round of the day was turned in by USM senior Kyle Morin (Lewiston, Maine). Playing as an individual, Morin carded an even par 71. Morin birdied the opening hole before bogeying the second and ninth holes to go out in 1-over 36. He opened the back nine with a birdie at number 10, then bogeyed 11 to stand at 1 over. A birdie at the par 4 16th got Morin back to even par for the day. Morin's 71 was a career low in competition at GCC.
USM senior Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine), also playing as an individual, turned in a 5-over par 76, giving the Huskies seven players finishing in the 70's.
The Huskies are back out on the links on Tuesday (11 a.m.) playing in the John Queenan Memorial hosted by Saint Joseph's at the Point Sebago GC in Casco, Maine.
