Kalagias Leads Southern Maine to Top Spot at UNE Invitational
KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine -- Senior Greg Kalagias (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) earned his second low medalist honor in the last three events after he carded a 3-over par 72 to lead the University of Southern Maine golf team to a first-place finish among the six teams competing Wednesday at the University of New England Invitational. The event was held at the Cape Arundel GC (par 69, 5,859 yards).
The Huskies, who have won their last three events and five of six this season, posted a four-man score of 298 to equal their season-best performance. Host UNE took the runner-up spot with a score of 311. Endicott College was third at 321.
Kalagias made the turn at 4-over par 39, then posted one birdie and eight pars on the back nine for a 33 to finish at 72. Tournament host UNE took the next two spots with Dylan Andrews and Tom Higgins posting scores of 73 and 74 respectively. Southern Maine took the next four spots though to earn the top spot in the team standings.
Seniors Tristan Dundas (Abbotsford, B.C.) and Parker Sanderson (Bangor, Maine) tied for fourth place as each posted a 75. Classmate Brendon Croteau (Lewiston, Maine) completed the Huskies' four-man aggregate score with a 76. Senior Ryan Dee (Houlton, Maine) tied for seventh place overall turning in a 77.
Southern Maine is back in action on Friday (12 p.m.) hosting the USM Cup at the Gorham CC. The unique event features two-man teams playing three different formats - six holes best ball, six holes scramble, and six holes alternate shot - during the round.
