PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior forward Mason Choice (Newport, R.I./Rogers) scored 13 points to lead a balanced attack as the 20th-ranked Rhode Island College Anchormen defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 73-40 Tuesday night at the Murray Center in Providence, Rhode Island.
With their third straight win, the Anchormen improve to 12-1 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference. The Huskies fall to 6-7 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
The Anchormen took control in the first half, shooting 48.0 percent (12-for-25) from the field to snag a solid 30-16 lead at the break. Choice scored eight of his 13 points in the half. Defensively, the Anchormen were able to limit the Huskies to just 16 points forcing 13 turnovers and a 29.2 shooting percentage (7-for-24).
In second half, RIC remained in control with a 10-0 run in the first four minutes opening up a 24-point lead, 40-16, with 16:33 on the clock. Junior guard Ethan Gaye (Providence, R.I./Mt. Pleasant) scored five of his nine points in the run. From there the Huskies were unable to get any closer than 22 points the rest of the way as RIC cruised to the win.
Rhode Island College finished the game shooting 49.1 percent (28-for-57) from the field and 82.4 percent (14-for-17) from the free throw line. The Huskies shot 30.4 percent (14-for-46) and here hampered by 24 turnovers. The Anchormen scored 31 of their 73 points off of USM turnovers.
Sophomore forward John Roberts (Falmouth, Maine) led all scorers with 15 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the field. He grabbed a team-high five rebounds. Senior guard Chris Pagentine (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) added seven points for the Huskies.
Choice was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to lead RIC with 13 points. Anchorman sophomore guard Avery King (Pawtucket, R.I./St. Raphael Academy) was the only other player in double-figures with 11 points.
Southern Maine hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Rhode Island College travels to Keene State College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
