
The Corsairs snapped a four-game losing streak with the win improving their record to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the Little East. Southern Maine falls to 6-8 and 0-5 in the Little East with its sixth straight loss.
Greene was 5-for-13 from the field to lead three Corsairs in double-figures. Greene added four blocked shots. Senior guard Paul Rose (Boston, Mass./North Cambridge Catholic) and junior guard John Genkos (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) each added 10 points.
Southern Maine senior forward Jeremy Jackson (Laplace, La./Independence) led all scorers with 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field. Jackson added a team-high nine rebounds and had three blocked shots. Senior guard Chris Pagentine (Lexington, N.C./North Davidson) chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Brandon Tomah (Princeton, Maine/Calais) added nine points, four assists and two steals.
With both teams shooting in the mid-thirties, the game was a grind it out defensive battle with neither team having more than a five-point advantage midway through the second half. The Huskies forced the 11th tie score of the game, 41-41, with 11:06 to play on a layup from Pagentine, before Corsairs strung together a pivotal 10-3 run to seize control of the game.
Following Pagentine's layup, the Corsairs responded with five straight points on a jumper from Rose and a three from Genkos. The Huskies' Jackson broke of the Corsair run with a strong move in the paint, but the Corsairs responded with 5-1 run capped by a jumper from senior guard Colin Burns (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) for a 51-44 lead with 5:27 to play. The Huskies were 1-for-7 from the field during that stretch and 1-for-2 from the free throw line.
A layup from Tomah with 5:18 on the clock, trimmed the Corsair lead to 51-46, but Rose answered right back with a three-pointer for the Corsairs' largest lead of the game, 54-46, with 4:37 to play. From there the Huskies were unable to get any closer than six points the rest of the way as the Corsairs closed out the game outscoring USM 7-2 down the stretch.
Southern Maine finished the game shooting 29.3 percent (17-for-58) from the field and 66.7 percent (12-for-18) from the free throw line. UMass Dartmouth shot 33.9 percent (20-for-59) from the floor and 69.6 percent (16-for-23) from the free throw line.
Southern Maine travels to UMass Boston on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.). UMass Dartmouth travels to Rhode Island College on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).
