DUDLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) scored a team and career-best 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, including three three-pointers as the University of Southern Maine Huskies dropped an 86-71 non-conference men's basketball game to the nationally-ranked Nichols College Bison Tuesday night at Nichols Athletic Center.
With the loss, USM is now 1-11 on the season. Nichols, ranked 24th in the latest D3hoops.com National Poll, improves to 9-1 with the win, marking its seventh consecutive victory.
The Bison raced out to a 45-31 lead at the half led by 13 points from Daequon Antoine and 10 points from Jerome Cunningham. Antoine canned four three-pointers in the opening half, while Cunningham was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field. The Bison shot over 50 percent from three-point range in the opening half to open up the 14-point advantage.
Led by nine second-half points from Hendricks and freshman DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis) the Huskies kept pace with the Bison in the second half, with Nichols outscoring USM narrowly 41-40, but the Huskies could not make-up their first half deficit.
Hendricks finished with 17 points, three rebounds and four assists for Southern Maine. Junior Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine) added 13 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Anderson finished with nine points, three rebounds, while senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) tossed in eight points, three rebounds, three steals and an assist.
Marcos Echevarria led all scorers with 18 points, followed by DeAnte Bruton's 15. Cunningham finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, while Antoine totaled 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday (3:00 pm) when it travels to UMass Dartmouth.
