GORHAM, Maine – Freshman guard DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team has been named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending January 21, 2018. The second USM men's basketball player to earn weekly accolades from the LEC the season, Anderson is earning Rookie of the Week honors from the conference for the first time.
In a 1-1 week for the Huskies, Anderson strung together a pair of outstanding games. In USM's 83-72 road win at Plymouth State, Anderson scored a game and career-high 29 points. Shooting 8-for-12 from the field and 12-for-15 from the free throw line, Anderson also earned his first intercollegiate double-double with a career-best 10 rebounds, and added a pair of assists. Anderson continued his effective offensive output in USM's game versus Western Connecticut, scoring 16 points on 7-for-19 shooting form the field, adding six rebounds and two assists. For the week, the Huskies' 6-2 guard averaged a team-leading 22.5 points per game, shooting 48.4 percent (15-for-31) from the floor and 76.5 percent (13-for-17) from the free throw line. Additionally, Anderson averaged 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 rebounds per game.
Starting the last three games, and playing all 17 of USM's contests, Anderson is averaging 8.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists. Against LEC opponents, Anderson is averaging 14.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 45.3 percent from the field.
Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) at UMass Boston.
