GORHAM, Maine – Freshman guard DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team earned Rookie of the Week honors from the Maine Men's Basketball Coaches & Writers Association (MMBCWA) for the period ending January 21, 2018. Recently named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, Anderson has played in all 17 of the Huskies games this seasn and has recently moved into USM's starting lineup for the last three games.
A 6-2 guard, Anderson had an outstanding week offensively helping Southern Maine to a 1-1 week, including an 83-72 win at Plymouth State. Against the Panthers, Anderson had a career night, netting 29 points on an 8-for-12 effort from the field, and a steady 12-for-15 mark from the free throw line. Contributing on both sides of the ball, Anderson also earned his first intercollegiate double-double snagging a career-best 10 rebounds, and adding a pair of assists. In USM's second game of the week, Anderson continued his effective play against Western Connecticut, scoring 16 points on 7-for-19 shooting from the floord, adding six rebounds and two assists. For the week, Anderson averaged a team-leading 22.5 points per game, shooting 48.4 percent (15-for-31) from the floor and 76.5 percent (13-for-17) from the free throw line. Additionally, Anderson averaged 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 rebounds per game.
Moving into the starting lineup, Anderson is averaging 8.7 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists for the season. Against LEC opponents, Anderson is averaging 14.7 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 45.3 percent from the field.
Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) at UMass Boston.
