GORHAM, Maine - Michael Boyd canned two foul shots in the closing seconds of the game to earn his game-high 19 points and lead the UMass Boston Beacons to a 58-53 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night at Fifield Court.
With the loss, Southern Maine is now 5-19 overall and 3-10 in the Little East. UMass Boston is 14-10 overall and 8-5 in the conference.
Boyd was one of two Beacons in double-figures, scoring 19 points on 7-of-21 shootin from the field. Charles Mitchell added 12 points and five rebounds, while Dasan Cinelli had nine points, seven boards, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Dan Powers added seven points and eight rebounds.
Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) was the lone Husky in double figures with 13 points. Freshman DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis) and junior Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine) each had nine points. Jany had six rebounds, while Anderson snagged four boards. Senior Donne Agossou (Auburn, Maine/Lewiston) added seven points and six rebounds.
Trailing the Beacons by six, 56-50, with 1:55 to play after an Cinelli layup on a feed from Boyd, USM pulled to within a possession of UMB. An offensive rebounds from Anderson led to one-of-two free throws from McCue, before Jany hit a tough basket in the paint to put USM behind the Beacons 56-53 with 34 seconds to go. Forced to foul, UMB missed the front end of a one-and-one and Agossou cleared the boards. The Huskies had a good look at a game-tying three with seven seconds left, but the ball spun around the cylinder and out. The Huskies sent Boyd to the line after the rebound, and he hit for two and the 58-53 final.
Southern Maine closes out its regular season on the road at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game. The Huskies will then await its Little East Conference tournament pairing for Tuesday.
