GORHAM, Maine – Seniors Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy), Byron McMillian (Washington, D.C./Takoma Academy) and Grayson Waterman (Berwick, Maine/Noble) have been named captains for the 2018-2019 University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team. Veteran head coach Karl Henrikson '79, now in his 16th season with the Huskies, made the announcement as USM prepares for its season-opening contest versus University of New England on Tuesday, November 13 (7:00 p.m) at Hill Gymnasium in the Costello Sports Complex.
"Each of these student-athletes has demonstrated leadership, commitment to the team, and a desire to improve as a program and individually," noted Henrikson. "Their actions on and off the court have earned the respect of their teammates and coaches, and have proven their ability to effectively maintain the standards of leadership within our program."
A steady presence in the backcourt, McMillian has played in the point guard spot for the Huskies during his tenure, and set a career-high of 12 points last season. A natural leader, McMillian is a three-time captain for Southern Maine. In addition to setting a career-high in points scored against UNE (November 15, 2017), McMillian also earned career-bests in assists and rebounds as a junior. The Huskies' 6-0 guard snagged eight rebounds against Bates (November 21, 2017) and dished out four assists in three separate games, most recently against UMaine Farmington (December 5, 2017).
Joining the Huskies for the first time last season, Waterman had a strong second half to the 2017-2018 schedule proving his ability to score in bunches, highlighted by an 11-of-21 shooting performance for a career-high 27 points in a thrilling 92-87 win over Colby College (January 30, 2018). Waterman earned Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) Player of the Week honors on February 6 after scoring 18 points and grabbing a seven rebounds in a 84-78 win at UMass Dartmouth (February 3, 2018). Transferring to USM after earning an Associates Degree in Liberal Studies from Southern Maine Community College, Waterman was also a member of the Huskies' golf team.
A second-team All-Little East Conference and MMBCWA All-State selection in 2017-18, McCue returns to the Huskies' lineup after averaging a team-leading 16.1 points per game while shooting an outstanding 42.2 percent (127-for-301) from the field. McCue's 16.1 points per game were seventh in the conference last season, while his 85.1 percent efficiency from the free throw line was second in the LEC.
With the ability to score from distance, McCue canned 50 three-pointers last season, and shot 35.2 percent from beyond the arc. Scoring in double figures in 18 games last season, McCue established a career-high of 36 points twice last season with his most recent coming against Keene State (January 27, 2018). McCue is a two-time William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete for the Huskies, earning his major in Computer Science and is completing a second degree in Theater this year.
