WATERVILLE, Maine – Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) and junior Jayvon Pitts-Young (Portland, Maine) combined for 32 points to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 79-58 win over the UMaine Presque Isle Owls Saturday afternoon at the Colby College Tip Off.
With four players reaching double-digits in scoring, Southern Maine earned its second consecutive win in as many games to improve to 2-0. UMaine Presque drops its second straight game to even out its record at 2-2.
McCue was 7-for-15 from the field for his 16 points, adding three assists and two steals. Pitts-Young was 5-for-9 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line to notch his 16, adding three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Senior Grayson Waterman (York, Maine) and junior Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) added 12 and 11 points each. Waterman had a team-high four assists, and shot 5-for-11 from the field, as the Huskies shot an outstanding 50.0 percent (30-for-60) from the field.
Sophomore DeAndre Duncombe (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led UMPI with 13 points. Junior Eric Anthony (Baltimore, Md.) was the only other Owl in double figures tossing in 10 points off of the bench. Junior Wilburn Griffiths (Queens, N.Y.) added eight points and six rebounds.
With Pitts-Young leading the way, scoring all of the Huskies' opening points, USM raced out to an 8-0 advantage early in the first. UMPI answered right back however with a 10-0 run and took the lead, 10-8, on a three from senior Quinn Mitchell (Meriden, Conn.) with 15:21. McCue hit a three in response for USM and an 11-10 lead and the game settled into a back-and-forth contest over the next five minutes.
Trailing 16-15, USM's Ian Nagle (Bangor, Maine) converted a layup off of a McCue assist to spur an 11-0 run to give the Huskies a solid 26-16 lead with 9:07 to play. Four different players scored in the run which was capped by a three from junior Derek Haney (Auburn, Calif./Placer). The Huskies grabbed their biggest lead of the half, 38-25, with 90 seconds left on a layup from senior Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine) as both teams exchanged baskets down the stretch for the 40-27 USM lead at the break.
USM opened the second half on a 10-2 run grabbing a 50-29 lead with 17:02 to play. Waterman, McCue and Pitts-Young combined for the 10 points in the run, led by four points each from Waterman and Pitts-Young. From there, the Huskies never led by less than 15 points the rest of the way en route to the 79-58 final.
Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday (3:00 p.m.) and will face host Colby College. UMaine Presque Isle travels to Eastern Nazarene for its next contest on Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
