GORHAM, Maine. – Cory Muckle drained seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to an 80-56 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Wednesday night Hill Gymnasium.
With the win, Eastern Connecticut gets the season-sweep of the Huskies and improves to 17-5 overall and 11-2 in the Little East Conference. Southern Maine dips to 4-17 overall and 2-11 in the conference.
Muckle was one of three Warriors in double-figures, shooting 9-for-22 from the field and 7-for-16 from three-point range. Muckle added eight rebounds and three assists. Carlos Gonzalez added 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals for ECSU, while Jake Collagan tossed in 17 points. Leonel Hyatt led the Warriors with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Southern Maine senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) led USM with 22 points, adding four rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Kylani Lafleur racked up a double-double with 10 point and a game-high 13 rebounds. Junior Keenan Hendricks had 10 rebounds and three assists, while junior Derek Haney tossed in nine points with four rebounds and two assists.
The Warriors led the Huskies by five points at the halftime break. Muckle had 17 of his 25 in the opening half, including a 5-for-9 mark from three, while McCue tossed in 13 of his 22 to pace Southern Maine. The score remained close to open the second half, and Southern Maine trailed the Warriors 44-40, with just over 15 minutes to play before ECSU strung together a pivotal 11-0 run over the next 90 seconds to lead 54-40 with 13:52 to play. Gonzalez scored five of the Warriors 11 points in the run, including a three for the 54-40 advantage.
USM trimmed its deficit to 10, 59-49, a three from Lafleur and a basket in the paint from Hendricks with 9:19 on the clock, but Muckle hit a three off of a steal by Collagan to start an 18-2 run capped by a layup from Jaysen Nunez for a commanding 77-51 lead. Collagan had eight points in the run, and the Warriors cruised to the win in the final three minutes.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) when it hosts Castleton in a Little East Conference game.
