Huskies Shoot Past Castleton 93-64

 

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) scored a game-high 19 points to lead six players in double-figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies shot an outstanding 47.6 percent (30-for-63) from the field to earn a 93-64 win over the Castleton University Spartans in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium. 

            With the win, Southern Maine is now 5-17 overall and 3-11 in the Little East Conference.  The Spartans are 0-14 in LEC action and 3-20 on the season.  Southern Maine knocked down a season-best 16 three-pointers, shooting 48.5 percent from long range for the game. 

            McCue added six assists and three steals to go along with his game-high 19 points.  Junior Jayvon Pitts-Young (Portland, Maine) had 13 points, eight rebounds, five assists and a steal, while junior Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) had a season-high 13 points and five rebounds off of the bench.  Senior Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine) and sophomore Ian Nagle (Bangor, Maine) each had 12 points.  Jany had six rebounds and three blocked shots, while Nagle's 12 points is a career-best  Nagle was 4-for-4 from the field, including a three.  Senior Avaughn Brown (Hartford, Conn.) rounded out the scoring with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

            Denis LeCours led the Spartans with 13 points and five rebounds, while Michael Morgan was the only other Castleton player in double-figures scoring 11 points and grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Casey Belade and Ben Mrowka each had eight points. 

            Southern Maine grabbed an insurmountable 40-19 lead at the break after shooting 41.9 percent (13-for-31) from the field in the opening half, knocking down six three pointers.  Leading 27-18 with 3:48 to play after Castleton's Morgan hit a three, Southern Maine closed out the half on an 13-1 run for the halftime score. Jany had nine of his 12 in the half, while Hendricks and McCue each had eight.  

            Southern Maine remained comfortably in front throughout the second half as the Spartans never got closer than 15 points.  A three from Castleton's LeCours made it 65-48 in favor of the Huskies with 9:13 to go, but Southern Maine rattled off nine straight points to close the door on the game to lead 74-48 with 7:48 to go.  Nagle keyed the 9-0 spurt with a three, and was followed by four consecutive points from McCue, before closing out the run with a bucket in the paint.  From there, USM never led by less than 25 points the rest of the way for the win. 

            Southern Maine is back in action at Bates on Monday (7:30 p.m.) in a non-conference game.
