Shapiro Named to All-NEHC Third Team

GORHAM, Maine -- Following a vote by the conference's head coaches, the New England Hockey Conference office announced Thursday afternoon that University of Southern Maine junior goaltender Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J.) has been named to the All-New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) third team.

Shapiro is the first USM player to receive all-conference honors since Alex Pompeo received first team all-conference honors in the 2013-14 season.  He is the sixth goaltender in the program's history to be named to an all-conference team, joining Dave Smith (1992-93), Matt Collaton (2001-02), Ryan Sullivan (2004-05), David Beckles (2005-06, 2006-07) and Braely Torris (2011-12) as all-conference honorees.

The third-year goaltender compiled a 2.52 goals against average, a .928 save percentage and a 6-9-1 record in 16 appearances this season.  He was twice (Oct. 31, Nov. 28) selected as the NEHC Goalie of the Week, and was picked for the D3hockey.com Team of the Week once (Nov. 30).

Over his three-year USM career, Shapiro has appeared in 64 games, including making 62 starts, compiling a 3.11 goals against average with a .908 save percentage.  He became the Huskies' all-time career leader for most saves made against Babson College on January 28, and has 1,819 saves heading into the NEHC playoffs.

Southern Maine, the seventh seed in the NEHC playoffs, travels to New England College to face the second-seeded Pilgrims on Saturday (7:00 p.m.).
