Papayoanou Scores First Career Goal for USM

GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Castleton University Spartans scored four special-teams goals Saturday to take a 5-1 victory and spoil Senior Day for the University of Southern Maine Huskies in New England Hockey Conference men's action at the USM Ice Arena.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Spartans, and improved their record to 7-13-3 overall and 3-12-1 in league play.  The Spartans took five out of a possible six points in the teams' three-game season series.  The Huskies dropped to 3-16-4 overall and 3-10-3 in NEHC play.

Junior Caleb Fizer (Sarasota, Fla.) led the Spartan attack with a four-point game, netting a power-play goal in the second period, a short-handed marker in the third, and two assists.  Sophomore Jacob Erwin (Port Dover, Ont.) and rookie Dom Kuziak (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) each had a goal and an assist, while senior Ryan O'Malley (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) dished out two assists.

Castleton senior goaltender Ryan Mulder (Ottawa, Ont.) recorded 25 saves to level his record at 6-6-3.

Rookie Adam Papayoanou (Valencia, Calif.) had the Huskies' lone goal scoring his first collegiate goal in the second period.  Classmate Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) made 18 saves.

Kuziak gave the visitors the lead late in the first period potting the rebound of a shot from Fizer for the first of Castleton's three power-play goals in the game.

Erwin tipped home a shot by O'Malley in the open moments of the second period for another power-play marker and a 2-0 lead.

Papayoanou cut the Huskies' deficit in half with his first goal carrying the puck across the front of the cage before beating Mulder.  Senior Alex Pantalone (Hudson, Mass.) and sophomore Mark Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.) picked up the assists.

Fizer scored the Spartans third power-play goal of the game just over three minutes later to restore the Spartans' two-goal lead.

In the third period, the Huskies were pressing on a 4-on-3 power play when the puck came out to the neutral zone where junior Corey Sikich (Hersoma Beach, Calif.) corralled the puck and passing ahead to Fizer.  Fizer beat D'Aloisio in close for the short-handed goal.  Fifty seconds later, rookie Glenn Wiswell (Berwick, Maine) scored the final goal converting a pass from senior Ryan Smith (Mississauga, Ont.).

Prior to the game, USM recognized its seven seniors playing in their final regular season home game: Patrick Magliano (Pelham, N.H.), Brett Norman (Dawson Creek, B.C.), Pantalone, Brandon Plourde (Kapuskasing, Ont.), John Waghorne (Wheaton, Ill.), Michael Washington (Denver, Colo.) and Ty Zampitella (Ipswich, Mass.).

Southern Maine heads out on the road for the final weekend of the regular season traveling to Babson College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday (4:00 pm.).  Castleton returns home to host Skidmore College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Hobart College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
