Huskies Host Johnson & Wales for Home Opener Next Friday

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) and rookie Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.) each scored a pair of goals as the Babson College Beavers parlayed a three-goal outburst in the first period into a 6-4 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a New England Hockey Conference men's game Saturday at the Babson Skating Center.

With the win, the Beavers remain undefeated through three games at 2-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play.  The Huskies dropped their second straight to fall to 0-2-0 overall and in NEHC play.

Munichiello combined with line mates sophomore Nick Rosa (Birmingham, Mich.) and rookie Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) for four goals and five assists in the game.

For Southern Maine, junior Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) had a goal and an assist.  Junior Colin Merrill (Portland, Maine), sophomore Mark Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.) and rookie Michael Green (Baie d'Urfã, Quebec) scored goals, and rookie Adam Withers (Kenora, Ont.) and sophomore Michael Taormina (Plymouth, Mass.) had two assists apiece.

The Beavers took a 3-0 lead in the opening period as Rosa, Wiesner and Egan all lit the lamp.  Rosa was set up by Munichiello and Rosa at 3:17 for his third marker of the season.  Ten minutes later, Wiesner potted his first goal of the game, and third of the campaign, to make it 2-0.  Egan tallied his second of the season at 15:32 to give the home side a 3-0 advantage.

Tomaschek's first goal of the season came 13 seconds after the Egan goal to cut the Beavers' lead to two.

Munichiello scored his first goal of the season, from Egan and Rosa, at 6:43 of the second period to make it 4-1.  Merrill, a transfer from Hobart College, scored his first goal as a Husky, on the power play, at 17:32 to keep the Huskies within striking distance.

Munichiello took advantage of an early third period penalty to score a power-play goal at 0:30.  Wiesner's second goal of the game at 3:18 gave the Beavers a seemingly comfortable 6-2 lead.

Braga scored his first of the season midway through the period, and Green scored his first collegiate goal with 2:26 remaining to give the Huskies a glimmer of hope.  But the Beavers were able to keep the Huskies at bay the rest of the way to preserve the win.

Babson senior goalie Matt Pompa (Palm City, Fla.) improved to 2-0 on the season after stopping 28 shots.  USM junior Paul Léger (Blainville, Que.) made 29 saves before being lifted in the final two minutes for the extra attacker.

Southern Maine plays its 2018-19 home opener next Friday (7 p.m.) hosting NEHC newcomer Johnson and Wales University.  Babson is at home next Friday (7 p.m.) hosting Castleton University.
