Southern Maine, Johnson & Wales Skate to 2-2 Tie
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Mike Bernot (Old Westbury, N.Y.) scored with 6:55 remaining in regulation to give the visiting Johnson and Wales University Wildcats a 2-2 overtime tie with the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's game Friday evening at the USM Ice Arena.
Southern Maine, still in search of its first win, gained its first point of the season in NEHC play with the tie and is now 0-2-1 overall and in league play. The game was the first NEHC game for Johnson and Wales, a newcomer to the league this season. The Wildcats are now 0-1-2 overall and 0-0-1 in NEHC play.
Bernot's game tying goal came after the Wildcats had gone down 2-0 in the second period. Junior Connor Bechtel (Doylestown, Pa.) put the Wildcats on the board at 12:52 of the second period knocking home a pass through the crease by Bernot.
Bernot scored the game-tying goal after splitting the Huskies defense to go in alone on USM sophomore goalie Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas). Bernot deked left before going right to slide a shot past D'Aloisio for his second goal of the season.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead at 6:00 of the opening period when rookie Jack Bernie's (Kenora, Ont.) pass deflected off a JWU stick past sophomore goalie Mike Rockwell (Poughquag, N.Y.). The goal was Bernie's first collegiate marker, and was assisted by junior Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) and rookie Adam Withers (Kenora, Ont.).
Braga doubled the Huskies lead at 1:16 of the second period slotting home a shot from in close.
D'Aloisio finished the night with 21 saves while Rockwell recorded 25 stops. Neither team was able to take advantage of the power play as the Huskies went 0 for 2 and the Wildcats were 0 for 6.
Southern Maine is back in action Saturday afternoon (4 p.m.) hosting Suffolk University, the other NEHC newcomer this season. Johnson and Wales travels to New England College for an NEHC game on Saturday (4 p.m.).
