Southern Maine Falls to #8 UNE 7-4
GORHAM, Maine -- The 8th-ranked University of New England Nor'easters overcame a sluggish start to score six unanswered goals en route to a 7-4 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the sixth straight for the Nor'easters, and improved their overall record to 7-1-0. The Huskies dropped their third straight to slide to 1-5-1 overall.
The upset-minded Huskies played one their best periods of the season in the first stanza building a 3-0 lead on goals from freshman Adam Withers (Kenora, Ont.), junior Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Taormina (Plymouth, Mass.).
Sparked by a goal from rookie Aaron Aragon (Whittier, Calif.) at 1:35 of the middle period, the Nor'easters erased the Huskies lead before the period was nine minutes old. Sophomore Jeff Eppright (Barrington, N.J.) scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 5:25, and freshman Jimmy Eiser (Verbank, N.Y.) tied the game at 8:40 forcing a Southern Maine timeout.
Tied 3-3 heading into the final period, it took the Nor'easters just 22 seconds to break the deadlock as senior Brady Fleurent (Biddeford, Maine) scored his sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Tyler Seltenreich (Littleton, Colo.) made it five consecutive UNE goals at 4:39, ands freshman Justin Dixson (Sunnyvale, Calif.) tallied his first collegiate goal at 11:33 to make it 6-3.
Southern Maine got one back when Braga scored his second of the game, on the power play, at 16:54. Seltenreich scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 1:08 to play for the final tally.
Seltenreich was the only multiple-goal scorer for the Nor'easters. Fleurent and Aragon each finished with a goal and an assist. Junior Ryan Bloom (Northville, Mich.) and freshman Austin Morgan (Novi, Mich.) each picked up two assists.
Withers had a hand in three of USM's four goals picking up the lone assist on Braga's goal.
UNE sophomore goalie Ben Churchfield (Newcastle, England) recorded 20 saves to pick up his sixth win of the season. Junior Paul Léger (Blainville, Quebec) stopped 22 shots in the USM goal.
The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday (7 p.m.) playing at Salem State University in a rescheduled non-conference game from November 20. The Nor'easters travel to Nichols College next Friday (6:40 p.m.) for a Commonwealth Coast Conference game.
