Taormina Gives USM 4-4 Overtime Tie at Bowdoin
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Sophomore Michael Taormina (Plymouth, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season with 39 seconds remaining in regulation to give the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies a 4-4 overtime tie with the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in a non-conference men's ice hockey game Tuesday night at Watson Arena.
The tie gives the Huskies a 2-12-3 overall record. The Polar Bears, who edged the Huskies 5-4 in December, are 5-7-2 overall.
With the goaltender out for the extra skater in the final minute of regulation, rookie Brendan Dowler's (New Preston, Conn.) shot was redirected by Taormina past Bowdoin sophomore goalie Kyle St. Denis (Katonah, N.Y.) to tie the game.
The teams skated through the five-minute overtime with St. Denis and USM rookie goalie Peter Ciccarelli (Chelmsford, Mass.) turning aside every shot. Bowdoin outshot USM in the extra frame 4-3.
In the opening period, USM grabbed a 1-0 lead at 7:14 as rookie Tyler Gardiner (Watertown, Mass.) converted the rebound of junior Cody Braga's (Middleboro, Mass.) shot. Taormina sent Gardiner and Braga in with a long breakout pass to earn an assist.
Rookie Michael Green (Baie d'Urfã, Que.) doubled the Huskies' advantage with a power-play marker, set up by Taormina and junior Mark Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.), at 4:50. The Polar Bears got on the board against Ciccarelli midway through the period when senior Cody Todesco (Franklin, Mass.) scored his 11th goal of the season.
The two sides combined for five goals in the final 13 minutes of the regulation. Sophomore Bradley Ingersoll (Waxhaw, N.C.) tied the game at 2-2 converting a feed from Todesco at 7:53. Less than five minutes later, USM junior Brock Padgham (Chilliwack, B.C.) regained the lead for the Huskies with his second goal of the season.
The Huskies' lead lasted just 81 seconds. Sophomore Jack Bliss (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored at 13:27 to tie the score at 3-3, and just over three minutes later, junior Caleb Perez (Loudonville, N.Y.) gave the Polar Bears their only lead of the night with his first career goal.
Bowdoin finished the game with a 35-30 edge in shots on goal. Ciccarelli made 31 saves for the Huskies. St. Denis stopped 26 shots at the opposite end.
Taormina finished with a goal and two assists to lead the Huskies' offense. Gardiner had a goal and an assist, and Braga dished out two assists. Todesco led the Polar Bears with a goal and two assists.
