Johnson and Wales Downs Southern Maine 4-2

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Seniors Chad Guderian (Coppell, Texas) and Ryan Sete (Jackson, Mich.) score third-period goals to give the host Johnson and Wales University Wildcats a 4-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's game Saturday at Lynch Arena.

The win, paired with Friday's tie with New England College, gave the Wildcats three out of a possible four points in the standings.  The Wildcats are now 4-12-3 overall and 2-8-2 in NEHC play.  The Huskies, unbeaten in their previous two games (1-0-1), fall to 3-13-3 overall and 3-9-1 in the conference.  The Huskies are one point ahead of the Wildcats in the standings after Saturday's game.

The home side went ahead 2-0 in the opening period on a power-play goal from junior Matt Bernot (Old Westbury, N.Y.) at 7:26 and a score from rookie Austin Withycombe (Kensington, Conn.) at 10:09.

Southern Maine cut the deficit in half before the end of the period when sophomore Mark Taormina (Plymouth, Mass.) tipped in a shot from classmate Jonathan Bartuccio-Pereira (St. Bruno, Que.) at 17:28.  Rookie Matt Fuller (Mirror Lake, N.H.) picked up the second assist.

The Huskies scored the only goal of the middle period as junior Brock Padgham (Chilliwack, B.C.) scored a power-play marker on a slap shot from the right point at 15:22.  Rookie Adam Withers (Kenora, Ont.) and sophomore Adam Papayoanou (Valencia, Calif.) earned the assists.

Guderian broke the tie 70 seconds into the third period when he knocked in the rebound of sophomore Jordan Stone's (Parker, Colo.) shot for his fourth goal of the year.  Guderian later set up Sete off a USM turnover for the insurance marker at 16:02.

JWU sophomore goalie Mike Rockwell (Poughquag, N.Y.) made 25 saves to earn his second win of the season.  Rockwell had 10 saves in second and third periods, and was particularly strong during a 5-on-3 USM power-play shortly after Sete's goal.  Sophomore Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) stopped 24 shots in the USM goal.

Southern Maine is at home next weekend hosting Skidmore College on Friday (7 p.m.) and nationally ranked Hobart College on Saturday (4 p.m.) for a pair of NEHC clashes.  Johnson and Wales is on the road next weekend to face nationally-ranked Babson College on Friday (7 p.m.) and the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday (4 p.m.)
