Southern Maine Falls to N.E. College in OT, 1-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Nicholas Rein (Calgary, Alb.) scored the only goal of the game at 1:55 of overtime to give the visiting New England College Pilgrims a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's action Saturday at the USM Ice Arena.
The win extended the Pilgrims' unbeaten streak to 16 games (12-0-4) and gave them a sweep of the teams regular season home-and-home series. The Pilgrims improve to 15-3-5 overall and 8-3-5 in NEHC play. The Huskies slip to 4-16-3 overall and 3-12-1 in conference action.
Rein collected the puck in his own zone and carried the length of the ice, circled the net and fired a 20-foot shot over the shoulder of USM junior goalie Paul Léger (Blainville, Quebec) for the winning goal. The goal was the third of the season for Rein.
NEC junior goaltender Anthony Pupplo (Shirley, N.Y.) earned his fourth shutout of the season stopping 24 shots. Léger made 26 saves for USM.
Southern Maine and NEC will close the regular season next weekend traveling to Vermont. USM will face Castleton University while NEC tangles with Norwich University on Friday.
