Mathieu Named to NEHC Honor Roll
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior Tyler Mathieu (Stillwater Lake, Nova Scotia) was among the recipients of honor roll recognition when the New England Hockey Conference announced its weekly men's ice hockey awards Monday afternoon. The weekly honor is the first of Mathieu's collegiate career.
In his only game last week, Mathieu recorded the first hat trick of his collegiate career in an 8-4 win at Castleton University that clinched the Huskies berth in the NEHC playoffs that begin this Saturday. Mathieu was the first USM player to score three goals in a game since Angelo Vranchas accomplished the feat against Salem State University on November 26, 2013.
A three-time captain, Mathieu shares the team lead for goals scored with nine, and has a career-high 14 points in 24 games this season.
Mathieu is the fifth USM player to receive a weekly accolade from the NEHC during the 2018-19 season. He joins junior Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.), freshman Tyler Gardiner (Watertown, Mass.) and junior Paul Léger (Blainville, Quebec) as recipients of weekly honor roll citations, and freshman Adam Withers (Kenora, Ont.) who received a Rookie of the Week honor.
Southern Maine, 5-17-3 overall and 4-13-1 in NEHC play during the regular season, is the eighth seed for the single-elimination NEHC tournament. The Huskies travel to Boston to face off against the top-seeded University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons on Saturday (7 p.m.)
