NEWTON, Mass. -- Senior goalie Kyle Cordaro (Worcester, Mass./Hebron Academy) made 15 saves as the Mount Ida College Mustangs defeated the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 6-2, in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.
The game was the season opener for the Huskies. The Mustangs evened their record at 1-1.
Freshman attack Peter Hardy (Tyngsboro, Mass./Bishop Guertin) paced the Mustangs offense scoring two goals. Rookie Chad Coehlo (Salem, Mass.) and senior Zach Rosen (East Greenwich, R.I./St. Andrews School) added a goal and an assist apiece.
Freshmen Jeff Urmston (Bellingham, Mass.) and Seth Wing (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner Area) scored the Husky goals. Wing also had the only assist. Sophomore goalie Ryan Jurgelevich (Portland, Maine) stopped a career high 15 shots.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter to take command. Hardy took a feed from Rosen and beat Jurgelevich for a 1-0 lead just 67 seconds into the quarter. Senior J.T. Hoyt (Westfield, Mass.) made it 2-0 converting a pass from Coelho. Senior Corey Gelbstein (Greenwich, Conn./Forman) netted an unassisted marker with 5:06 to play in the quarter, and Rosen finished off the four-goal period with an unassisted score with 1:11 remaining.
The game settled into a defensive battle over the final 45 minutes with each side scoring twice. Coehlo scored the lone goal of the second quarter with 51 seconds remaining to give the home side a 5-0 advantage at halftime.
Hardy scored his second goal of the game off an assist from freshman Ryan Trinque (East Greenwich, R.I.) early in the third period before Urmston broke the scoring ice for the Huskies with 1:13 to go in the period.
Wing, who set up Urmston's goal, had the only goal of the final quarter.
Southern Maine is back in action on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) playing the University of New England. Mount Ida will be at home on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) hosting Salem State University.
