Pini, Kinney Receive LEC Weekly Accolades
GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced Monday afternoon that two members of the University of Southern Maine men's lacrosse team - sophomore Robby Pini (Natick, Mass.) and freshman Colin Kinney (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) - have been selected for weekly recognition.
Pini was the pick for Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Kinney was tapped as the Rookie of the Week. This the first LEC weekly honor for both players.
In a 2-0 week for the Huskies, Pini caused three turnovers and scooped up 24 ground balls. The sophomore picked up 16 ground balls – the second-highest single-game total in program history – and caused a pair of turnovers in a 15-7 conference win over Salem State University before grabbing eight ground balls and causing one turnover in a 14-10 LEC victory at Castleton University.
Kinney had a total of six goals and one assist in the two games. He scored a pair of goals in a conference win over Salem State before scoring four goals with one helper in a 14-10 conference victory at Castleton. Kinney had three goals during the Huskies' decisive six-goal second-period run that erased a 3-2 deficit and gave the Huskies an 8-3 lead at halftime.
For the season, Pini has scooped up 76 ground balls and caused 17 turnovers. Kinney now has 10 goals and two assists for 12 points.
Southern Maine, 6-6 overall and 3-3 in LEC play, will host the University of Massachusetts Boston for a Little East Conference game tomorrow evening (7 p.m.).
