The University of Southern Maine Athletics Department announced on November 15 the appointment of alumnus Tobey Farrington as the new head coach for the men’s lacrosse program.  Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM, made the announcement following a national search.

Farrington becomes the fifth person to lead the men’s lacrosse program since 2001 when the sport was elevated to varsity status.  He succeeds Sam Lane who resigned this fall after seven seasons to pursue other professional opportunities.

"I am extremely excited for the opportunity that the University of Southern Maine has given me,” commented Farrington, who played on the Huskies’ club team and first three varsity squads (2001-2003).  “The university is dedicated to its student-athletes and I look forward to working with them.  I am delighted to be back at my alma mater and look forward to leading the program to new heights."

A three-time captain, Farrington played in 37 varsity games during his career (2001-03), including making 15 starts.  He scored 26 goals and dished off 14 assists for 40 career points, and was credited with 50 ground balls.

“It's really exciting to have Tobey join our staff as head coach for men's lacrosse,” said Bean.  “Tobey's passion and excitement for the game of men's lacrosse is really a big reason for USM sponsoring the sport.

“As a student at USM, Tobey was persistent in pushing forward to organize the club lacrosse team and get funding and practice time so they could compete on a regular basis.  He organized and was part of the club team and later served as captain of our first intercollegiate teams.

“After USM, he began a successful coaching career, won a state championship and has stayed involved in coaching with the club lacrosse scene” continued Bean.  “Tobey is really excited to be returning to USM as head coach and I know he will work very hard to move the program forward.”

After graduating from USM, Farrington began his coaching career guiding the Scarborough (Maine) High School program for four seasons (2004-07).  He guided the Red Storm to a 14-1 mark and the state Class A title in 2006, and was named the USLacrosse Coach of the Year in Maine in 2007.

Farrington has been a coaching staff member for the past 15 years at the Bowdoin College Polar Bear Lacrosse Camp, and has been involved with local private programs, including Maineiax and LaxPros.  He also is the head coach and operator of Downeast Lacrosse Club.

Farrington earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology from USM in 2003, and received an associate’s degree in paramedicine from Southern Maine Community College in 2016.
