GORHAM, Maine – As the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's soccer prepares for its season opening Husky Challenge Classic this weekend, veteran head coach Mike Keller announced senior Charlie Mull(Portland, Maine/Cheverus) as captain for the 2018 season.
In his fourth season with the Huskies, Mull, a talented goalkeeper and field player, will continue to lead with his versatile play. In 2017 Mull, who has played forward, goalkeeper, defender and midfield during his career, helped anchor a stingy Southern Maine defense in 2017 that allowed just 1.69 goals against in the course of 19 games. Taking on some of the Huskies' toughest defensive assignments, Mull was a leader on the back line, and came up with several big plays during the season in the air and during one-v-one defensive moments. With the ability to score, Mull added one goal and one assist in 2017, including an assist in USM's 4-2 win over local rival University of New England.
In 2016, Mull played both forward and goalkeeper with great success. As a field player, Mull tallied two goals and passed off an assist for five points. Mull, an exercise science major, played 14 games in the field for Southern Maine, starting each contest, and was Southern Maine's second leading scorer. In the net, Mull played in three contests, starting one. In a 2-2 overtime draw with Castleton, Mull played in the field and in goal for the Huskies. He made four saves in 45 minutes of action, and scored Southern Maine's second goal in the 55th minute.
In 44 career games played, Mull has earned 40 starting assignments. He has three goals and two assists for eight points in his career. A Health Science major, Mull is a 2016-2017 William B. Wise Scholar Athlete.
