GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Jonata Mbongo(Portland, Maine/Deering) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's soccer team has been named the Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the inaugural week of the 2018 season.
A first-year player for the Huskies, Mbongo helped Southern Maine to a 0-1-1 record at the conclusion of the 2018 Husky Challenge soccer tournament. Mbongo's play at center back earned him a spot on Husky Challenge All-Tournament team.
Playing all 210 minutes over two games, including the 120-minute double-overtime 1-1 draw with Coast Guard, Mbongo turned in an outstanding pair of performances. Mbongo's ability to control the ball and create from the back was instrumental in the Huskies' draw with Coast Guard. Trailing 1-0, with just 37 seconds remaining in regulation, Mbongo delivered a well-placed cross into the box finding teammate sophomore Benjamin Musese (Lewiston, Maine) for the equalizer, forcing the overtime action.
Southern Maine hits the road for its next contest and will travel to Maine Maritime on Wednesday (6:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
